A Successful Model for Treating Chronic Diseases
Four Countries
The burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes and childhood coronary disease, continues to grow globally, with many patients living in rural communities far from specialized staff and medical equipment.
Seeing this reality, PIH staff in Rwanda, Liberia, Malawi, and Haiti began training nurses and other health workers to provide chronic care at more remote district hospitals.
The WHO African Region was inspired by PIH’s example. It changed its policy on NCD care in rural settings and launched a new regional strategy, which will provide chronic care for thousands of patients who were previously left behind.
