The movement toward universal health care is growing—no matter the setting. 

Two new studies highlight incredible improvements in child and maternal health in Rwanda and Madagascar in recent years, showing repeated success, in very different environments, for Partners In Health’s ground-up model of building health systems and supporting universal care.

Orderly lines of homes and shelters stretch far down crowded, uniform roads at Mahama Refugee Camp in southeastern Rwanda, where more than 55,000 people have arrived since 2015 after fleeing political unrest and violence in Burundi.

Partners In Health, the Government of Rwanda and other collaborators broke ground in September on an innovative, two-story building that will be able to house more than 70 cancer patients, loved ones and caregivers on the Butaro District Hospital campus, providing stability and community during extended treatment.
