Training, Clinical Mentorship, Supervision and Competency Assessment
Sustained training and mentorship is essential for quality mental health care delivery and a main pillar of the PIH Cross-Site Mental Health model. Linking across all phases of the matrix and throughout all levels of the value chain, this theme considers approaches for strengthening clinical capacity and competencies among care providers and improving the quality of mental health services. It encompasses approaches such as the PIH adapted Mentoring and Enhanced Supervision at Health Centers-Mental Health (MESH MH) model in Rwanda and WHO supported interventions such as the Ensuring Quality Psychological Support (EQUIP) project in Peru.
Training
Leveraging best practices in training from Zanmi Lasante in Haiti, PIH adapted training materials to be usable across contexts for providers and community health workers. Each of the resources here may be adapted to fit local contexts and needs. Select examples can be found below.
Mentorship, Supervision, and Competency Assessment
Mentoring and Enhanced Supervision at Health Centers-Mental Health (MESH MH)
The PIH teams in Rwanda and Malawi use MESH, adapted from an HIV care supervision model in Rwanda. MESH is a health center nurse-training implementation strategy where mentors travel regularly to the health centers to provide mentorship and supervision, supporting general nurses to care for patients with mental health care delivery.
